Safe and stimulating learning climates refer to aspects of teacher-student relationships such as creating a safe and relaxing classroom climate, showing respect to students and ensuring that students respect the teacher and their peers, and encouraging self-confidence of students (CorneliusWhite, 2007; Hattie & Clinton, 2008; Author et al, 2012; Smith, Baker, Hattie, & Bond, 2008; Teodorovic, 2011; Willms & Somers, 2001).
A safe and stimulating learning climate distinguishes itself by teacher comments aimed at the subject (content) rather than at the student as a person. The tone and choice of words used by teachers are of great importance. They are role models, after all. Teachers adjust their didactics to the age and development of their students. The playful element is important for the learning process of young adults. Teachers ensure that the curriculum is clear and guide students through it in a clear manner.
They discuss errors in the thinking process of students without causing them public loss of face.
This domain consists of four items. The ICALT form lists the items and examples of good practice (checkindicators) for each of these items. They describe the concrete behaviour of an effective teacher.
A safe and stimulating learning climate hinges on:
- respect for students
- relaxed atmosphere
- promotion of confidence
- mutual respect
