Aims

With an international perspective and a particular focus on secondary education, GETLIN aims to facilitate global discussion and cooperation in general and specific areas:

A. General

  1. Investigate and improve the cross-cultural validity of instruments measuring effective teaching practices
  2. Enable the possibility of building comparable effective teaching profiles and identifying stages of teacher development worldwide
  3. Better understand the precursors of complex effective teaching practices
  4. Document the contexts in which teaching and learning take place in various countries
  5. Gain insight into the relationship between teaching practices and student academic engagement (and achievement) in an international context
  6. Identify suggestions for effective teacher training and professional development at national at international level
  7. Document best-practices in effective teaching and learning internationally

B. Specific

Differentiation has been recognized as an important aspect of the contemporary education worldwide. GETLIN has a specific focus on facilitating discussion and cooperation on this specific topic. Differentiation can be applied to maximize the learning potential of students with varying characteristics. However, many teachers struggle to implement this complex skill. More insights are needed into:

  • how teachers in various countries practice differentiation in their daily teaching practices
  • which factors inhibit or enhance differentiation practices
  • how teachers’ differentiation skills develop over time
  • how differentiation influences students’ non-cognitive outcomes such as academic motivation and engagement
  • how to measure differentiation in a valid and reliable way between various cultural contexts
